The North West Coast Ancient Woodland Restoration Project

With funding provided through the partnership between Woodland Trust and Native Woods Cooperative (Scotland) Ltd, Gary is able to provide free support and advice to owners and managers of woodlands and Plantations on Ancient Woodland Sites (PAWS) in an area stretching from Ballachulish in the south to Cape Wrath in the north. His work is focused around the following themes:

  • Achieving ‘favourable condition’ status for native woodland SSSI and SAC habitats
  • Landscape scale collaboration and cooperation projects
  • Native woodland expansion
  • Community woodlands
  • UKWAS/FSC monitoring of native woodland habitats
  • Management and restoration of native Caledonian pinewoods
  • PAWS restoration
  • Restoration and management of wood pasture habitats
  • Rhododendron control and removal

Gary is currently involved in ancient woodland restoration activity at more than twenty sites – stretching from the Isle of Rum in the south west to Assynt in the north west. The North West Coast AWR project has so far helped to enable landowners and managers to commit over 1500 hectares of ancient woodland into restoration and expansion programmes, and has succeeded in working with a variety of landowners to ensure that some 350 hectares of native woodland are now in active restoration management.

For further information or support on this don’t hesitate to contact Gary.
